A small salt spoon next to some small rolls of paper. One of an ongoing series of devotional paintings of insignificant everyday subject matter. The large scale of the work allows the viewer to experience the relationships of the forms and spaces in more connective, less literal ways. My inspirations for this series have been Rembrandt's Jewish Bride and Morandi's small paintings of groups of bottles. A visit to Italy reaffirmed my love of Quattrocento painting and my debt to the work of Fra Angelico, particularly on seeing the Annunciation at the convent of San Marco, Florence.
